UNUSUAL WEEK 4
God's love is unchangeable!
[A 4-WEEK SERIES ON DAVID]

Watch this week’s video

READ: David and Bathsheba: II Samuel 11:1-15; (Psalm 51)

MEMORY VERSE: "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways' Declares the Lord." Isaiah 55:8

Unusual animals are interesting and unique, just like King David’s story. It was unusual for David to become a king, and he didn’t always get things right, but his story teaches us that, God uses unlikely people, and gives unexplainable joy. Our families will get to know an unchangeable God who does unexpected things.

Week 4 Resources

READ: David and Bathsheba: II Samuel 11:1-15; (Psalm 51)

SONG: God is for Me

ACTIVITY/GAME:

Gather two sets of wacky clothes. Have 2 family members race to see who can put on the clothes the fastest. To make this game more difficult use a balloon. Have family members donn clothing while keeping a balloon in the air, the way a sea lion does with a rubber ball. Repeat as many times as you want giving each family member a try. Explain; We had to do a lot of changing in that game . . . literally! Today, we are going to hear about something that is truly unchangeable!"

COLORING:

David and Bathsheba

DISCIPLE:

Use a screen to show three, classic optical illusions: duck or a bunny, two faces or one vase, young or old woman.

Have your family call out what they see. This will be a lot of fun because different people will see different images. Reveal that both interpretations are correct. Like these images, there are times when you face a situation where the way you see it is completely different than someone else does.

Explain; God doesn’t only care about the wrong things we do, but also how we respond when people do wrong things to us or around us.

Now, this doesn’t mean you should let people hurt you – you’re kids and it’s your trusted adults’ job to make sure you’re safe and healthy, so if someone is hurting you, always tell your parents or your teacher or your pastor or someone else you trust and they will help you talk out the big feelings. Never keep it to yourself if someone is really hurting you. God does want us to practice our forgiveness when our friends and siblings and even when our

parents do things that make us mad. Let’s try some scenarios and see how we might deal with them and how we can find it in our hearts to forgive people.

  • What if a friend was playing with your favorite toy and they broke it?

  • How about if there was only one juice box left and your brother took it without even offering it, even though he had the second-to-last one yesterday?

  • What if your mom promised that she’d take you to the playground this weekend, but she ended up having to go to work?

A lot of times, both sides are right. The best way to approach situations like these is try to understand the other person’s point of view and both offer and ask for forgiveness. The good news is that God is always there to forgive us! Unlike these images that do change, God is the same yesterday, today, and forever! God’s love is unchangeable!

Pray;

"Dear God, your love is always there, even when we make mistakes. Your unchanging love helps me to be forgiven and to experience a new life. Thank you for giving us everything we need. Help us to be examples of your unchanging love. Amen"

DISCUSSION:

  • Where was David supposed to be?

  • Why was it wrong for David to be in love with Bathsheba?

  • How did David try to cover up what he had done?

  • Re-read II Samuel 11:1. It can be dangerous when we're not where we're supposed to be. When have you found yourself in trouble because you were not where you were supposed to be or doing what you were supposed to do?

  • How do you respond when you see something you really want, but can't have?

  • What do you do after you've made a big mistake?

  • Why does God still love us after we've done wrong things?

Unusual animals are interesting and unique, just like King David’s story. It was unusual for David to become a king, and he didn’t always get things right, but his story teaches us that, God uses unlikely people, and gives unexplainable joy. Our families will get to know an unchangeable God who does unexpected things.

Week 3 Resources

READ: God's Promise to David: II Samuel 7:1-4a; (Psalm 89:20-37)

SONG: God is for Me

ACTIVITY/GAME:

Lay out six plastic cups upside down and tell your family they are going to have to make a beehive (i.e., stack the cups like a pyramid), but there’s a

catch – they’re bees, so they can’t use their hands! They can only use the tool provided: a rubber band with 3 or 4 long strings attached to it. Let kids figure out how they’re going to use the tool to stack the cups. If you have younger children have them stack them use their hands to stack the cups.

In this week’s Bible story, we’re going to hear more about King David, and something that he wanted to build.

COLORING:

God's promise to David

DISCIPLE:

Read; II Samuel 7:1-4a; (Psalm 89:20-37).

Ask your family; How does it feel to get an unexpected gift? Have every family member name a time when they got something they didn't expect.

Askl have you ever really wanted a specific gift for your birthday, and ended up getting something totally different . . . but the thing you got was even better than what you wanted? Didn’t it feel great to get that unexpected gift?

Can you imagine that’s how David might've felt after he received those amazing promises from God. God surprised David with the unexpected and you know what? God will surprise us with the unexpected, too, and sometimes, it will be even better than what we imagined. Remember that God’s plans, God’s purposes, and God’s power are so much bigger than what our wants and desires are. Our God does unexpected things!

Pray;

"Dear God, thank you for the promise you made to David, which was far better than what he had in mind. We are thankful that your promise includes all of us. Help us to remember that when you do unexpected things, you show us you love us and have the very best in store for us! Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • What did David want to do for God?

  • How was God's plan different from David's?

  • What did God promise David?

  • Read Psalm 89:29. What do you think this means about making David's "line" last forever? Do you think God had a purpose for more than just David? If so, what do you think that purpose is?

  • What does God keeping the promise to David mean for us?

  • Why is it important that we not put a limit on what God can do?

  • When has God done the unexpected in your life?

[A 4-WEEK SERIES ON DAVID]

READ: David Dances Before the Ark: II Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19; (I Peter 1:8-9)

MEMORY VERSE: "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways' Declares the Lord." Isaiah 55:8

Unusual animals are interesting and unique, just like King David’s story. It was unusual for David to become a king, and he didn’t always get things right, but his story teaches us that, God uses unlikely people, and gives unexplainable joy. Our families will get to know an unchangeable God who does unexpected things.

Week 2 Resources

READ: David Dances Before the Ark: II Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19; (I Peter 1:8-8)

SONG: God is for Me

ACTIVITY/GAME:

Get cards from games like “Don’t Say It” or “Taboo.” You can also use an online generator (like this). Play game as a family. The objective

is to get the players to guess the main word on their card without saying words on the forbidden list.

Explain; Wasn’t it challenging to explain some of these words without saying the forbidden words? Sometimes it’s really difficult to explain things. Like . . . the color blue. How would you explain the color blue, without using the world, “color”? But just because something is unexplainable, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. God may, at times, give us something that is difficult to explain, but it’s very real!

COLORING:

David dances before the Ark

DISCIPLE:

Explain; Have you ever been so happy about something that you just didn’t know what to do with yourself? I mean really happy. I mean really, really happy. So happy, that you felt it bubbling up and bursting out? How did you respond to all that happiness? So, what do you think is the difference between happiness and joy? Happiness is tied to a circumstance, maybe an event or an object or a person. Joy is not connected to just one thing or person. Joy is an attitude we can have in our hearts no matter

what is happening around us. True joy comes from God! Read

II Samuel 6:1-5, 12b-19; Knowing that God was near filled David with joy.

Pray;

" Dear God, we live in a world where we are always fighting to be happy. Thank you for reminding us today that true joy is not found in the things we have, but in the God we serve. Thank you for filling us with unexplainable joy. Help us to spread that joy to those around us who so desperately need it. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • What did David summon his troops to get?

  • Why was the Ark of the Covenant so important to David?

  • How did David respond when the ark finally arrived in the city?

  • Read I Peter 1:8-9. Do we need to be able to see God in order to feel the love of God?

  • What makes you happy?

  • What is the difference between happiness and joy?

  • How can we get unexplainable joy?

UNUSUAL WEEK 1 - God uses unlikely people!
[A 4-WEEK SERIES ON DAVID]

WATCH THIS WEEK’S VIDEO

READ: David Becomes King: I Samuel 16:1-13; II Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10; (II Corinthians 12:9-10)

Week 1 Resources

READ: David Becomes King: I Samuel 16:1-13; II Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10; (II Corinthians 12:9-10)

SONG: God is for Me

ACTIVITY/CRAFT:

SPECIAL OIL; Let your kiddos pour oil, water, and food coloring into a water bottle using a funnel. Seal the top with duct tape or hot glue.

Explain; This bottle has oil in it. You can see it moving in the water bottle. In the Bible, Samuel used special oil to show that David would be the next king.

UNUSUAL CHARADES:

Ask what does “unusual” means? Unusual means something that you

might not really expect, something uncommon or unique! Let’s play some charades in a very unusual way!

Write down animals on index cards (for example; pig, cow, sheep, fish, lion, snake, whale frog, rooster, bee, dog, cat owl, monkey, wolf, duck, etc). They have to hold the card up to their forehead so everyone can see, and the entire group has to make the noise that animal makes. Let the volunteer guess what animal it is! Afterward, show them parts of this video of unusual sounds some animals make!

Isn’t it cool to hear all the sounds different animals can make? You wouldn’t think that some animals can make the noise they do based on how they look – did you hear how cute those enormous rhinos can sound? It’s unlikely, but it’s true!

David didn’t look like much, but God chose him to become king. We might not seem like we can do anything big, but don’t forget – God uses unlikely people all the time!

COLORING:

David becomes King

DISCIPLE:

Share a story of a time that you felt judged prematurely, and then open it up for your family members to share also, maybe they remember being judged on their outward appearance or their age or gender or ability.

Explain; "we all experience being judged unfairly based on what people think they can tell about us from the outside. We all make mistakes and judge other people unfairly. Even Samuel did that, and he was one of God’s special messengers! But remember what God said to Samuel when he did that? God

looks at people’s hearts! No one knows what’s in people’s hearts . . . only God can. No matter what any of us look like on the outside, what matters to God is what’s on the inside. That’s how God uses unlikely people to do great things!"

Read I Samuel 16:1-13 and II Samuel 5:1-5, 9-10 as a family. and reflect on David's story.

Pray;

"Dear God, thank you for making us all unique! You have placed something special in each and every one of us. Forgive us for not seeing that in one another as we should. Help us to love our friends the way you love them and not judge those around us based on their outward appearance. We know you can do amazing things in unlikely ways. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • Why did Samuel immediately assume that Jesse's oldest son was the one whom God had chosen?

  • What did God tell Samuel about all of Jesse's sons?

  • Why did Jesse not call David into the house in the beginning?

  • Read II Corinthians 12:9-10. This verse says that we should be okay with our weaknesses. Why do you think that is?

  • What does it mean when we say God uses unlikely people?

  • What are some things we can do to see people for their hearts the way God does?

  • How can we have the kind of heart God looks for?

READ: Ruth: Ruth 1:1-18; (Lamentation 3:22-33)

MEMORY VERSE: "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

Leaders take the lead. Like a drum major leading a marching band or the grand marshal at a parade, leaders are out in front showing others the way. Legendary leaders of the Bible like Deborah, Gideon, Samson, and Ruth will help our kiddos see what leadership looks like and how they can become great leaders too. Young leaders will grow this month learning that "God gives me courage to lead", "helps me learn from mistakes", and "gives me leaders I can follow." Everyone can be a leader, let’s take the lead together.

CRAFT:

Hometown Map

Give your kiddos a piece of 11”x17” white paper and white crayon. Have them draw a lot of horizontal and vertical lines at random all the way across their paper. Then have your kids color over the entire paper with green and blue colored pencils or watercolor paint. Give them the Hometown

Map printable (this one) and help them fill out each billboard. Afterwards, they can cut out each billboard and glue them to their map. For more fun, teach kids how to fold their maps like a real map!

FOR TODDLERS: Help kids draw their families or other things from their town on the paper. Let them color over it with watercolor paint.

Look at all the cool places on your map. Would you miss these places if you ever had to move away?

In today’s story, Naomi wanted to go back to her hometown, so Ruth followed her. But by following her, Ruth would be leaving her hometown, too!

Ruth was able to say goodbye to all of her favorite things at home because she trusted Naomi and God.

God gives us leaders to follow!

DISCIPLE:

Shoebox Floats

What is a parade without a float! Have your family build a shoebox float together. You family can choose any one of our Bible "grand marshals" we've been talking about – Deborah, Gideon, Samson, or Ruth – and imagine that they are going to be honored on that float!

Gather a shoebox and a bunch of different supplies (ie; crayons, colored pencils, markers, play-doh, play, wiki sticks, stickers, gems, washi tape, construction paper, glue/tape, scissors, glitter, etc). Check out some of these to give you an idea: example 1, example 2, example 3. For fun play this months theme song while they decorate!

Pray: Dear God, thank you for giving us leaders we can follow, leaders who are kind and real who show us how to trust you and do the right thing. Help us to take the lead by imitating leaders who love you and care about us, instead of spending a lot of time being influenced by people who don't help us grow. We know that when we follow the right people, we are actually following you! Amen.

DISCUSSION:

How was Ruth related to Naomi?

Why did Naomi decide to return to her hometown?

What did Ruth say when Naomi told her to go back to Moab?

Read Lamentations 3:22-24. How does this verse remind you of Naomi's actions? Of Ruth's actions?

Who are some of the people you trust the most when it comes to picking what to wear, eat, buy, watch, or listen to?

How do you decide whose opinion matters most in your life?

What are some things you do when you follow someone?

DIY Balloon Float

Give each family member a balloon and tell them to blow it up and tie off. Provide markers, construction paper, scissors and tape, and encourage the kids to create their own balloon animal float — check out this image for some inspiration. Try not to peel tape off of the balloon because it could pop.

Have you ever accidentally let a balloon fly away before? What do you do so that doesn't happen again? That's right, you weigh it down or tie it securely around your wrist. That's an example of learning from our mistakes!

Remember, when you make a mistake, you're not doomed! You can always correct it, and most importantly, God will help you learn from it! God helps me learn from my mistakes.

COLORING: https://coloringhome.com/coloring-page/381371

DISCIPLE:

"Beautiful Oops"

Watch this reading of "Beautiful Oops" by Barney Saltzberg. Then, give your kiddos this Beautiful Oops printable. Have them to spend time transforming some of these "mistakes" into something new.

Mistakes happen. But instead of wallowing in our failures and missteps, it's important we remember what caused the mistake, and avoid it in the future. And instead of letting our mistakes get us down, we can find ways to repurpose them and turn them into good things!

Who can help do that in our own lives? That's right, it's God. We can pray to God and ask how we can learn from this experience, and seek out help from loved ones!

God helps me learn from my mistakes.

Pray:  Dear God, thank you for understanding that we all slip up and mess up from time to time. But we ask for Samson-like strength to learn from our mistakes and avoid making the same ones again. Thank you for helping us and for turning our mistakes into beautiful opportunities to grow. Amen.

DISCUSSION:

What question did Delilah keep asking Samson?

Why was giving Delilah the right answer a mistake?

How did God help Samson one last time?

Read Judges 16:24 and Psalm 9:3-5. In what ways are those prayers similar? Which prayer is the one made to the one true God who helps us?

Are mistakes a good thing or a bad thing? Why do you say that?

What is one mistake you made recently?

What has God helped you learn from making that mistake?

Torches of Courage

What did Gideon and his army use to defeat the enemy?

Make torches so your kiddos can pretend they're part of Gideon's army!

INSTRUCTIONS: Use paper (either white or colored) to roll up and tape like a "cotton candy cone" and decorate the cone with stickers or glitter glue. Lay on top of each other three pieces of tissue paper — one red, one yellow, and one orange — at varying angles. Gather the tissue paper at the center and stuff them into a cone to "light" the torch.

Let the torch remind your family that incredible things can happen when you trust God. God gives me courage to lead.

COLORING: https://sundayschoolzone.com/activity/god-gave-gideon-courage-color-by-number/view/

DISCIPLE:

Ask your family, did you know some of the first parades were held on boats? That might be they're called parade "floats" . . . because there was a time when floats literally floated!

Use a sheet of paper to write down some of your kiddos fears. Next, show your kiddos how to fold the paper into a boat (see instructions here). Then, tell them to place their boat in the water (your sink or bathtub).

Now, just because we put our fear boats in the water, it doesn't mean our fears automatically disappear. But this is a good way for us to remember that no matter what we are afraid of, God will give us courage to float them away when we ask.

Pray: Dear God, there are many times when we are afraid, especially when we need to be leaders. Help us not to be scared during those times. Help us to trust that you will keep us safe, and that you will give us courage to lead. Amen.

DISCUSSION:

What kind of soldiers did God tell Gideon to keep?

Why do you think God wanted Gideon to fight the Midianites with a small army rather than a large one?

Which "weapons" did Gideon and his army use to defeat the enemy?

Read Psalm 20:7-9. Why are we able to "rise up and stand firm?"

What does courage look like to you? How can you tell if someone has it?

In what areas of your life do you think you need more courage?

Can you think of one way God might be nudging you to take the lead?

READ: Deborah: Judges 4; (Psalm 130)

MEMORY VERSE: "And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Micah 6:8

Week 1 Resources:

READ: Deborah: Judges 4; (Psalm 130)

SONG: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gn1QKn-Oce8

CRAFT:

Reference a chart like this one to see what kinds of animals you can make using handprints. Lay out multiple sheets of paper (taped together like a banner) and finger paints on plates. Let kiddos dip their hand in paint and put their handprint on the paper. Make sure all the handprints are lined up (like a parade). Once the paint dries a little, help kids turn their handprints into an animal of their choosing.

All of these animals are different because all of your handprints are different! But that's why God thinks each of you are special.

Every single one of us, as different as we are, can do something for God. Everyone can be a leader!

COLORING: https://netart.us/deborah-the-bible-heroes-coloring-page/

DISCIPLE:

Makings of a Leader

Use paper, scissors, tape, and markers/crayons to make a simple banner with mutiple large circles drawn throughout. In the circles, have each person write positive words that describe themselves or another family member.

This weeks Big Idea is that everyone can be a leader. That means everyone in our family can lead in some way. Not everyone is meant to lead in the same way, but God made us all to be leaders in some way. Take your banner and put it up somewhere in your home to remind you that your family can lead too!

Pray: Dear God, thank you for showing us that being a leader doesn't mean we have to fit into any box or category. Help us to lead in places that we can by listening to you and doing what is right. Give us opportunities to be the kind of leader that leads others to the ultimate leader – you! Amen.

DISCUSSION:

Why did Israel have judges?

What message from God did Deborah tell Barak?

How was the commander from Canaan defeated?

Read Psalm 130:3-4. How can you tell from today's Bible story that God forgives?

In your own words, what is a leader?

Do you like being a leader? Why or why not?

Can you think of some ways God might want you to be a leader?

DISCIPLE:

Draw a tree on a piece of poster board or sheet of paper and hang it up. Ask your family to think of someone in their life who is a part of God’s family — not necessarily their own —who has shown them what faith looks like. Encourage them to write that person’s name or draw them on the Faith Family Tree.

Explain; Our lesson series this month has been called, “Legacy.” Explain to your chidlren what a legacy is. The Holy Spirit is the legacy that Jesus gives us. Our journey with God doesn’t happen alone. God has given us people — parents, grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles, friends, and your leaders here at church who show us what it means to follow Jesus.

Pray with your family and thank God for our church family for showing us that we are a part of God’s family.

Pray: "Dear God, thank you for the legacy you gave to us . . . the Holy Spirit. Thank you for making us a part of YOUR family. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for showing us how to live like members of God’s family. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • What good news did Paul give the Romans?

  • How can we be children of God?

  • How do God's children live?

  • Think about our memory verse this month. How do we know who God's children are?

  • What is your favorite part about belonging to God's family?

  • How can you show others you are part of God's family?

  • How can you invite others into God's family?

DISCIPLE:

Show your families this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HbFeXsA6Ho, of the most iconic landmarks around the world. Write down all the places from the video on a sheet of paper. Ask each of your family which of these places they would most want to go and tally the responses.

Explain that each of these places around the world are so cool. What makes the world even more special than all of these landmarks is the people! Each one of us is different. We look different, we speak different languages, and we have a variety of cultures. But even though we are so different, there is one thing we have in common: God loves us. And God has provided a way for all of us to love God back. The Holy Spirit is for everyone!

Pray: "Dear God, we are so grateful that your love includes all of us. Thank you for choosing to give everyone your Holy Spirit. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • Where were the disciples when the Holy Spirit appeared?

  • What happened when the people were filled with the Holy Spirit?

  • What did people think about the disciples when they heard them speaking their own languages?

  • Re-read Psalm 139:7-10. Where is the Holy Spirit?

  • If you could learn to speak another language, what would it be?

  • How does knowing that the Holy Spirit is for everyone affect how you treat others?

  • What is one way the Holy Spirit can change you?

Give each family member a sheet of colored construction paper and draw 2 large circular gears and cut them out. In this first gear, have each family member write one thing (or cut our a picture from a magazine and paste in the gear) that they could do for God when they're older. Inside the second gear, have them write one thing (or cut out a picture from a magazine and paste in the gear) they could do for God this week. Hang your gears so that theyre interlocking. When you see them they will remind you that the Holy Spirit helps us to do God's work now AND in the future!

  • Explain, the Holy Spirit helps us do God's work. Think about yourself in the future — if you knew you could do one thing for God when you grow up, what would you want to do? Maybe you would . . .

    • Care for people who are sick.

    • Be a part of a group that helps orphans find families.

    • Become a teacher.

  • Explain; The Holy Spirit gives us all our own unique gifts and abilities. To do something big for God, we don't have to be a pastor or have the entire Bible memorized. We can all do God's work in whatever we do, especially since the Holy Spirit helps us every step of the way!

Pray: "Dear God, help us to remember that because we have the Holy Spirit with us, we can do your work even if it seems hard to do. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • Why did the disciples need to pick a new member for their team?

  • How did the disciples decide who to choose and what was his name?

  • Who helps us do God's work?

  • According to I John 5:12-13, who can have eternal life?

  • How can you help a friend find Jesus?

DISCIPLE:

We're learning that the Holy Spirit helps us to know God. When we know God, we know that God wants us to treat others with kindness. And that's where the Holy Spirit comes in . . . to help us love everyone! It's not enough to just say you love someone. Love is an action. How we can actually show love?

Use four large sticky notes or sheets of construction paper to make a train. One paper should be the engine, labeled "Holy Spirit." The other three papers are the railroad cars behind the engine, labeled, "family," "friends," and "others." Give each family member three regular sticky notes and write or draw ways to show love to the people in each category. Have each family member stick their responses on each of the railroad cars.

  • How can we show love to our families? (e.g., Help with dishes or laundry, put away toys, write thank you cards.)

  • How can we show love to our friends? (e.g., Share toys, carry books, help with schoolwork, remember their birthdays.)

  • How can we show love to other people we know but who aren't our friends? (e.g., Include them in games, invite them to sit with you at lunch, stand up for them.)

Pray: "Dear God, help us see people the way you see them, so we can love the way you love. We pray the Holy Spirit will help us every day to love others even if they are different from me. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • What made Cornelius different from Peter?

  • How did Peter find out that God loves everyone, even if they are different?

  • How can we receive the Holy Spirit?

  • Read I John 5:1. Do you think it is possible to love God but not love God's children?

  • How has God shown you love?

  • Who is someone who is really different from you?

  • How can you show them love this week?

DISCIPLE:

You will need a piece of paper for each family member and some colored pencils. Explain how the Holy Spirit impacts every part of our lives. Sometimes, we don't even notice it.

  • First, draw a line all the way across your paper. Make three dots on the line.

    1. Over the first dot, draw a picture of the person who invited or brought you to your church family. That happened in the past.

    2. Under the second dot, draw a picture of yourself, where you are right now (home, the car, the library, etc).

    3. Over the third dot draw a picture of someone you know who you can invite to church. That will happen in the future.

Now, we have the past, present, and future. Go back and draw one big heart over all three pictures. Explain God's Holy Spirit directs our lives and connects the past to the present, and the present to the future.

Pray:  "Dear God, thank you for knowing us so well. Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to help us so people can know you better. Thank you for loving us! Amen."

DISCUSSION:

  • What did the Holy Spirit tell Philip to do?

  • Who did Philip meet on the desert road?

  • What did Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch talk about?

  • Read Romans 15:13. How does this verse encourage us?

  • What does the Holy Spirit do for us?

  • What are some things you know about God already?

  • What are some things you want to know more about?

DISCIPLE:

Use a piece of construction paper and decorate it with markers, crayons, or colored pencils. Then use a styrofoam cup with the bottom cut out of it. Roll the construction paper up to fit inside the bottom of the cup. Attach the construction paper to the cup with masking tape. Give each kid a piece of clear cellophane wrap. With a permanent marker, write "JESUS" on the wrap. Place the wrap over the end of the cup with "JESUS" facing in. Put a rubber band around the end of the cup to hold the cellophane in place. When you look through the telescope, you will see "JESUS."

Explain that when you look through the telescope, Jesus is everywhere you look! Jesus is always with us. When you don't feel like you have the strength, remember you can always look to Jesus to give you strength! We are stronger with Jesus.

Pray with your family... "Dear Jesus, give us strength to do what you have asked us to do in our lives, especially when things are difficult. Remind us that you are always with us and we are stronger that we know because of that. We love you! Amen."

CONVERSATION:

* Where was Jesus going? Why?

* What did Jesus tell us to go and do?

* Who did Jesus say he was going to send to help the disciples?

DISCIPLE:

Gather your family and encourage them to play a few rounds of "Rock, Paper, Scissors" against each other, replacing the words with, "Rock, Paper, Cheerers." Whoever wins the round has to create a cheer for those who lost and chant it a few times. The game continues like this until every person has had a chance to cheer for everyone else.

Explain that sometimes in life, things don't go like we would like them to and we can get disappointed. In those moments, Jesus will encourage us or send others to encourage us!

In what ways can Jesus bring encouragement into your life? Make a list and help your children remember those things listed throughout the week when they may experience discouragement.

Pray with your family... "Dear God, thank you for encouraging us. You show us mercy and love even when we don't deserve it. Help us to show each other mercy. We want to be encouraging and loving like you. Amen"

CONVERSATION:

DISCIPLE:

Show this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kRycxdU2nA. Talk about how people climb mountains like Everest in groups and must work together to achieve their goal.

Explain that climbing mountains is tough work. It's not for everybody and many people who want to climb one of these great mountains will fail. However, people who set out to climb a mountain with a great team have a much better chance to make it all the way to the top! God wants to use each of us to help others see how they can be connected, too, through Jesus. Think of someone you would like to be connected to through Jesus!

Pray with your family... "Dear God, thank you for always helping us to build our faith and confidence in you. Thank you for connecting us all to help us in our faith. When things aren't easy to believe, you give us each other as a reminder that you are still here with us. Thank you for helping us rise up together. Amen."

DISCUSSION:

* When Jesus came into the room, what did Jesus say to the disciples?

* What did Thomas say to the other disciples when they told him they saw Jesus alive?

* For Thomas to believe, what did Jesus show Thomas?

* Read I John 1:3. What do you think it means to have fellowship with God?

* Fellowship is one way to say we are connecting with others. What are some ways we connect with others in general?

* Who are the people you are connected with when you believe in Jesus?

NOT NORMAL WEEK 3: Jesus invites us to be like Him (Matthew 4:18-23)

Watch this week’s video

Why be like everyone else when we can be wacky, backward, and weird? We can try to blend in and be like everyone else, or we can stand up and stand out. After all, that’s what Jesus did! When Jesus showed up, His whole life seemed not-so-normal to most people. From His childhood to His early ministry, it was clear from the beginning that Jesus wasn’t like most people. In this 4-week series, families will examine the early life and ministry of Jesus as they discover that Jesus is not normal, that Jesus is God, that Jesus is perfect, and that Jesus invites us to be not-so-normal along with Him.

We invite you to visit us on our Canyon Creek Project YouTube channel or FaceBook live for Family Experience every Saturday morning at 11AM.

March 27: Jesus invites us to be like Him

Jesus Calls the Disciples: Matthew 4:18-23

(Mark 8:34-36; Ephesians 5:1-2)

Memory Verse

—(elementary) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. -2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

—(preschool) This is the day that the Lord has made. -Psalm 118:24a

Theme Song

Coloring page

Craft

Disciple: Google search an image of a fishing net and show your children.

ASK: What do you see in this picture?

What are some challenges of using a net versus using a fishing pole to catch fish?

What do you think it would be like for fishing to be your everyday job?

Read Matthew 4:18-23; Jesus encounters some normal men who caught fish for a job, and He called them to live a not normal life!

ASK: What do you think Jesus meant when He said they could be fishers of people? Jesus traveled around teaching and sharing the good news about God and His love. He healed people who were sick, helped people who needed help, and changed lives.

Jesus gave these men a chance to leave their normal lives and do something extraordinary, but they had to choose to follow Him for that to happen. Jesus invites us to do that, too.

ASK: What are some ways we can be like Jesus?

Activity: DIY Hovercraft

INSTRUCTIONS: Find a blank CD, a permanent marker, a balloon, a thumbtack, and a bottle cap. Use the thumbtack to poke four holes in each bottle cap. Next, glue the bottle cap to the hole in the middle of the CD. Then have your kids (or an adult) blow up the balloon and carefully place it over the bottle cap without tying it, then release the balloon. The balloon will cause the CD to float like a hovercraft.

Following Jesus is like following a leader who knows what’s ahead and what will be best. If we go our own way, we could really end up in a discouraging place!

The Holy Spirit lifts us up and guides us, kind of like this hovercraft, made in a not normal way!

Additional Discussion Questions:

  • Can you name the four men Jesus called to follow Him? (Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John.)

  • What did the men have in common? (They were fishermen.)

  • What did the men do when Jesus asked them to follow Him? (They dropped their nets and followed Jesus.)

  • Why do you think they dropped everything to follow Jesus?

NOT NORMAL - Week 3 - Jesus is Perfect (Luke 4:1-13)

Memory Verse

(elementary) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.  - 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)
(preschool) This is the day that the Lord has made. - Psalm 118:24a

Disciple:

Either watch this video with your family https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX_oy9614HQ or set out your family’s favorite cookies. Read Matthew 4:1-11 from the Bible. This is the story of when Jesus was tempted.

ASK: What do you think you would have done if you were given this test?

Do you ever get tempted to eat a cookie before dinner, even if you’ve been told not to eat it?

Food was one of the things the devil used to tempt Jesus to try and get Him to do the wrong thing, but Jesus didn’t listen. How do you think Jesus resisted this temptation? Jesus is perfect and did not give into temptation. This makes Jesus NOT NORMAL.

Activity:

The Bible story told us about how the devil took Jesus to a tall place. As a family stack blocks, LEGOs, or cardboard boxes as tall as you can. Then, let

your kiddos knock down the tower and build another. Do this as many times as you’d like.

ASK: What did Jesus tell the devil when He was up in the high place? Jesus said that He would only worship God. Spend some family time talking with God in prayer. Use this time to thank Jesus for being perfect and how He has shown us how to say no when we are faced with things that we need to say no to.

Additional Discussion Questions:

  • Why was Jesus so hungry in the wilderness? (He didn’t eat for forty days.)

  • Can you name the three temptations Jesus faced? (Turn stone to bread, throw Himself from a high point, worship the devil.)

  • How did Jesus combat each temptation? (By remembering the words of God.)

  • What makes it hard to resist temptation?

  • What can we do when we are tempted?

READ SCRIPTURE | 1 Corinthians 10:13

  • According to this verse, are we ever tempted in a way that no one else has been?

  • How does it say God will help us when we are tempted?

  • If God helps us, then why do we still choose to give in to temptation sometimes?

  • How can this verse help you next time you are tempted to do something wrong?
