NOT NORMAL WEEK 2: JESUS IS GOD (Matthew 3)

Watch this week’s video

Why be like everyone else when we can be wacky, backward, and weird? We can try to blend in and be like everyone else, or we can stand up and stand out. After all, that’s what Jesus did! When Jesus showed up, His whole life seemed not-so-normal to most people. From His childhood to His early ministry, it was clear from the beginning that Jesus wasn’t like most people. In this 4-week series, families will examine the early life and ministry of Jesus as they discover that Jesus is not normal, that Jesus is God, that Jesus is perfect, and that Jesus invites us to be not-so-normal along with Him.

We invite you to visit us on our Canyon Creek Project YouTube channel or FaceBook live for Family Experience every Saturday morning at 11AM.

Memory Verse

(elementary) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. - 2 Timothy 3:16 (NLT)

(preschool) This is the day that the Lord has made. - Psalm 118:24a

Disciple: Share your Baptism Story

Share your baptism story with your children. Share what you were feeling during baptism and what made you choose to get baptized. How did you feel afterwards?

-Talk to your children about how baptism is something people do to show they are following Jesus. It is a symbol of what Jesus has done in their lives. Jesus set an example for us and then said His followers should also be baptized. Then read from the Bible to find out what happened when Jesus was baptized (Matt. 3:11-17)

If you haven’t been baptized and are having a difficult time disciplining your children through this weeks lesson, please contact us at familyexperience@canyoncreekproject.com. We would love to share our baptism experience with your family.

Watch this video as an additional resource in helping explain baptism to your kiddos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xqQ580wV9s

Activity: Backwards Basketball

Repenting means to choose to turn away from sin and turn toward God. It’s when we agree with Jesus that our sin is wrong and we need to follow God. Repenting is more than just saying “sorry,” it’s going the other direction.

Let’s play a game where we do something backwards and turn the other way. Watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnFkzOIOh5M&feature=youtu.be

Have each family member take turns dribbling backwards and, with everyones’ help give directions, shoot the basketball behind their backs and try to make it into a bin or a basketball hoop. The first one to make a basket wins!

Additional Discussion Questions:

  • What did John say when Jesus wanted to be baptized by Him? (Jesus should baptize him instead.)

  • The Spirit of God appeared to Jesus like what animal? (A dove.)

  • Why does it matter that Jesus is God, and not just human?

  • Why do you think being baptized was so important to Jesus?

  • Why do people get baptized?

Ask: What are some normal things dogs do? This is a video of a dog doing some very not normal things! In our Bible story (Luke 2:41-52), Jesus was doing something unexpected and different. Ask: What was Jesus doing that was not normal for a boy His age? He was teaching in the temple! Jesus was filled with wisdom, even at an early age. We can be thankful for Jesus, His wisdom, and His help every day. Apply: What are some things we need God’s help with? Let’s pray for God’s wisdom and help with those things. Pray with your family.

Family Activity: Skittles Painting

Paint pictures that remind us Jesus is not normal! But we’re not going to paint a normal way! Use skittle candy to paint!

INSTRUCTIONS: Sort skittles by color in small cups. Use paintbrushes and thick paper. Dip paintbrushes in the ‘Skittles cups’ and paint pictures that say “Jesus is not normal.”

Additional Discussion Questions:

  • What did Jesus do in this story that was not so normal? (He went back to the temple.)

  • What was Jesus doing when His parents found Him? (Teaching in the Temple.)

  • What are some things that make Jesus not normal?

  • What’s the hard part about living a not normal life when following Jesus?

  • What is not normal about our lives when we follow Jesus and live His way?

REAL LOVE - WEEK 4: LOVE IS THE BEST CHOICE (MARK 12:28-34)

WATCH THIS WEEK’S VIDEO

“We are always teaching our kids that we need to love God and love one another, but often times neglect to give them tangible ways to do so. In this series, we are going to examine a few of Jesus’ teachings in depth and discover practical ways we can demonstrate our love for God, family, friends, and enemies, too! Our hope is that by the end of this series, every family will be able to say, because God loves everyone, I can show God’s love by being kind, I can show God’s love even when it’s hard, and that ultimately, love is the best choice!”

Experience this lesson through family worship:

Read Mark 12:28-34; “We have been learning a lot about God's love this month. But now we need to figure out how do we love God? Today's Bible verse tells us to love God with our heart, soul, mind, and strength. That's pretty much saying, love God with EVERYTHING you have, right? But it doesn't stop there! Jesus tells us also to love our neighbor as ourselves... which is pretty much saying, love others with EVERYTHING, too!

Activity: Loving Our Neighbors

Go to the Compassion International website https://www.compassion.com/sponsor_a_child/view-all-children.htm

View a few of the children’s profiles, read about their different communities and countries. You could either browse through the site with your family. When Jesus tells us to love our neighbors, He’s not just talking about people who live near us. It means all people are our neighbors, even if they live in other parts of the world. These are some of our neighbors from other countries. What kinds of needs do you think they have? And what can we do to show them love? Remember —God loves everyone and God wants all of us to love everyone, too!

Additional Discussion Questions:

  1. What does Jesus say is the greatest commandment?

  2. What about the second greatest commandment?

  3. How do we love God? How do we love our neighbors?

  4. Read Mark 12:31… Think of a time when you didn’t treat someone the way you would have wanted to be treated. If you come across a similar situation today, what would you do differently?

  5. What is something you can do to love God with all your heart and soul this week?

  6. What is something you can do to love God with all your mind and strength this week?

  7. Who is one person in your life who really needs God’s love?

  8. What can you do for that person this week to love them as yourself?

Experience this lesson through family worship:

Read Matthew 5:40-48; after reading the passage, show your kiddos one bunch of bananas.

“What are some things you like about bananas? What are some things you don't like about bananas?

Regardless of how you feel about bananas, they are actually very good for you because they contain many things we need to make our bodies healthy. But you know what might not be so good for you? People who are mean to you, treat you poorly, or hurt your feelings–people who drive you bananas!

But wait! Look at verse 44 again. Jesus tells us to "love our enemies"–that is, the people who drive us bananas–and He even says to pray for them! It is so much easier to show love to people who we enjoy being around and who are also kind to us, but today's Bible verse tells us that anyone can do that. The real challenge is to show love to those who, in your opinion, don't deserve your kindness. Because that is exactly what God did for us –God showed us love by sending Jesus to save us when we didn't deserve saving at all! That's why we should also love everyone –even our enemies –even when it's hard.”

Activity: Scratchy Sandpaper

Show your kiddos a rough piece of sandpaper and let them feel how scratchy it is. “Some of the people we know are kind of like sandpaper. They can be a little rough and hard to get along with. Their words, actions, and personalities might seem "scratchy" to us, and may hurt our feelings or make us mad. But we learned God loves everyone, and that we can also show God's love to everyone by being kind. "Everyone" includes our sandpaper friends. While it's definitely challenging to do so, we can show God's love to them, especially through kindness.”

Additional Discussion Questions:

  1. What does the Bible say about how we should treat our enemies?

  2. How does loving our enemies show we are God's children?

  3. Should we love only those who are kind to us? Why or why not?

  4. Read Romans 12:20-21… What are some ways you can "heap burning coals" of kindness on someone this week?

  5. Why do you think God wants us to love our enemies?

  6. Describe a time when it might be hard to love someone.

  7. How can you still show God's love and be kind in that situation?

Read John 13:35 “We did nothing to deserve God’s love, but God loves us anyways. In the same way, we should love others no matter who they are, and show kindness without expecting anything in return. And when we do, everyone will know we are followers of God!”

Activity: Domino Effect

Line up a tin of dominoes and share a story about a time when someone was kind to you and how that made you want to be kind to others.

Sharing God's love is like a domino effect: by showing someone God's love through kindness, we inspire them to do the same. And they inspire other people. And so on and so forth. (Conclude by gently knocking over one domino to demonstrate the effect).

Additional Discussion Questions:

  1. Why did the lawyer ask Jesus a question?

  2. Who was the "neighbor" in today's Bible story?

  3. How did the Samaritan show kindness?

  4. Read John 13:35…. How will other people know you are a follower of Jesus?

  5. Describe a time when someone was kind to you.

  6. What are some ways you can show God's love through kindness to your friends and family?

Activity: Love is…

Choose some or all of the following "love is" words based on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7–patient, kind, not jealous, humble, polite, caring for others, controlling your temper, forgiving, good, honest–and write each one on separate index cards.  Put the index cards in a bowl and have each family member draw a card. Next, have each person demonstrate what their "love is" card by acting it out.

  3. How did God show His love for us?

  4. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-8….Which of these love actions (i.e., being patient and kind; not being envious, proud, rude, easily angered, etc.) is the most challenging for you? Why?

  5. How do you usually show someone you love them?

  6. What do you think is different about how God loves and the way people love?

  7. What's one way you can make God's love "contagious" to everyone around you this week?

1.30 Family Experience Story/Resources

THIS WEEK, we conclude our January Family Experience series, UNBOXED and learn that “We can trust God with our Gifts!”, focusing on 2 Corinthians 9:1-15.

“With the holiday season having just passed by, most kids still have the concept of giving and receiving gifts fresh on their minds. While many, if not all, of the gifts that were unboxed at Christmas will eventually fall into disrepair, gifts given by God will never fade! Through this “Unboxed” series, kids will discover what kinds of gifts those are, starting with the fact that everyone has special gifts! Then they will see how God can use those gifts to help others, among those gifts being special blessings from God, as well. Our gifts help us care about what God cares about, by focusing on heavenly things, and we can trust God with our gifts when we offer it up cheerfully!”

Activity 1: Made with Gifts

  • INSTRUCTIONSGet sticky notes in assorted colors and give a few of each color to each family member. Then when you say go, have each family member go around and put sticky notes on each other!

  • “Look around! Is there anyone who doesn't have a sticky note on them? No! Just like how everyone has special gifts from God!”

Activity 2: Hot Potato Gift Edition

  • INSTRUCTIONSLike the game, Hot Potato, your family is going to pass around a gift-wrapped box to show that sometimes we get a gift and sometimes we give a gift away. Make sure the kids pass the gift nicely. Play music as the kids pass the box and stop it occasionally. Whoever is holding the box when the music stops is out of the game. Repeat until there is a winner. To take this activity to the next level, consider putting little treats or toys in the box. The winner gets to pass it out to everyone! Or, each time the music stops, whoever is holding the box gets a gift before they are out of the game.

  • There are two ways we use gifts. We can either give them to someone or we can get a gift from someone.

  • Have you ever given someone a gift?

Family Worship Activity:
Ask your kids/family what their favorite Christmas song is? Create a cheer (with motions, dance moves, and marching!) with the lyrics of the song (for example; we wish you a merry Christmas). You can use pom-poms or megaphones as props. After cheering your song lyrics a couple times, cheer our BIG IDEA “We can Celebrate because God keeps promises.” Use this as a tool throughout the week as your lead your family into daily worship.

Lets make a map of our schools, our home, our church, or even the way we get from our home to our favorite store.

Family Worship Activity:

Do something courageous with your kids this week. Some ideas are a simple trust fall on your couch or something bigger, like a really tall slide at the park. You know your children best; so choose something that they’re slightly afraid to do- and do it with them. Make the connection that you are with them to help calm their fears. God is like that too. He calms our fears and helps us not be afraid just like he did for David. Read 1 Samuel 21:10-22:2 and Psalm 56 together.

You will need:

A bar of soap

Paper

Scissors

Something to draw with

Tape

Super Soap
:

Draw the outline of a person on a piece of paper.  Discuss how sin (the wrong choices that we make) clouds up our hearts and separate us from God. Ask your child to provide examples of sins and then write the name of the sin on the figure. Explain that God's forgiveness, through Jesus, is like super soap that washes away our sins when we are truly sorry and ask forgiveness. Decorate a bar of soap using a piece of paper decorated with stamps, crayons, stickers, or markers.  Tape the label on the soap to finish.

Family Worship Activity:

Have a bubble party this week! Spend a good amount of time blowing bubbles with your family. Then have everyone sit and watch while one-person blow the bubbles. Let’s watch what happens when we blow a bubble. Watch as it floats in the air and then pops! That helps us understand what happens when we pray to God and ask God to forgive our sins. God forgives us and it’s gone!!! Just like a bubble pops and is instantly gone, you are instantly forgiven because God loves you!

Family Worship Activity:

As a family, play follow the leader. Give each person the chance to be “the leader”. The leader will choose an action and the rest of the family will follow. Explain that it’s fun to be the leader. The best leader we have is God and we should always follow that God tells us to do. We can be confident when God is our leader. The bible tells us so- Read Psalm 119:101-105 together.

Family Worship Activity: Play a game with your family. Choose one person to be blindfold. Tell them they need to retrieve an object from the room (you choose ahead of time) and bring it back. Let them try…Make sure they don’t hurt themselves or run into anything. Stop them after a few moments and say “great try!” Then, try again, but this time lead them by verbal step by step directions. Make the connection that “it’s so much easier when Im guiding you, isn’t it? I was watching over you the entire time to make sure you didn’t get hurt and you knew the right way to go.
