Staycation - Week 1

Grab some blankets and flashlights! We're going to build a fort or jump on the couch because the floor is lava! That’s right — it's time for a family staycation! In this five-week series about Abraham and his family (and our families, too!), our families will learn that God blesses us so we can bless others and God always shows us compassion. That’s why we can trust God (even when it's hard to trust each other), always belong in God’s family, and can make peace with others — especially the people who live with us!

Read Psalm 89:1-4. 

Wow! Here we read more about God’s amazing blessings! We heard about God’s faithfulness, God’s love that  stands firm forever, and God’s promise to a kingdom — a perfect home —that will last for all generations!!
The promise of a forever home was made possible through Jesus, God’s son. When we decide to have a  forever friendship with Jesus, we become a part of the family of God.
Although homes may not always be perfect here, we have the promise of a kingdom coming—a forever  home—that will make all the wrong things right. Knowing that promise is coming, gives us hope, and changes  the way we live now. 
The thing I love most about this Psalm is that the author says that he will share the good news of these  blessings! He is going to tell others about the blessings! That’s what we get to do too! God blesses us so we can bless others.

 

Pray: Dear God, thank you for blessing us. You not only give us good things, but you invite us to bless others with what you’ve given to us. Let us always remember that you have blessed us so that we can bless others. This is the best way to live. Amen.

In this four-week series from the very beginning of the Bible, we’ll compare God’s ability to make good things with our tendency to break them. Through the stories of creation, the fall, Cain and Abel, and the Tower of Babel, we’ll see that God makes good things, unbreaks what’s been broken, and made us different on purpose, so we should honor God with the things we make.

DISCIPLE:

Show your family an item someone made for you, such as a sweater, a quilt, a picture of a room someone decorated for you, or show an item you made for someone else. Share about the person, the item, and what it meant to receive or give it as it relates to God being honored. Invite your kiddos to share their experience. Making something with love takes time and intention, which means we do it with purpose . . . not just putting something together meaninglessly.

We can honor God with the things we make. When we make things with love, God's love is reflected in that. Any time that God is on display, it honors God!
Pray: Dear God, thank you for giving us the ability to make things that honor you. Help us find ways to show everyone how good you are to us through everything we make, everything we say, and everything we do. Amen.

DISCIPLE:

Put a puzzle together as a family. 

God made a world that was completely perfect, just like this completed puzzle. The world, and this puzzle, had everything it needed!

[Start removing pieces from the puzzle.] When the first humans made the choice to go against God, they messed it up. It wasn't a perfect world anymore. Their relationship with God was broken, and they probably started to feel aches and holes in their hearts, like loneliness and sadness.

[Try to fit pieces into mostly the wrong places.]  We can do our best to try to fix things ourselves. Sometimes it seems like we are able to make things better on our own . . . but we just might end up more "puzzled" than before.

[Place the pieces back into the right places.] But only God unbreaks what's been broken because only God sees the big picture and knows where everything is supposed to go!

Pray: Dear God, we know you made things good and sometimes we mess that up. Thank you for caring about us and helping us fix the broken things in our lives. Amen.

DISCUSS:

  • From what tree were the man and woman tempted to eat?

  • What did the serpent say to the woman?

  • Why did the man and woman hide from God?

  • Read Matthew 9:12-13. What do you think Jesus means by saying that it's the sick who need a doctor and not the healthy people?

  • Can you name some things that are broken in our world today?

  • How do you know God planned all along to unbreak, or fix, what the first humans did in today's story?

  • What might you do to help someone feel better when they feel broken — for example, when someone feels sad or sick?

DISCIPLE:

 Read John 1:1-5 with your family.

Do the first three words of the first verse in the book of John sound familiar? What does it remind you of? It starts off in a similar way to the way Genesis 1 begins: "In the beginning." 

Do you remember what God made on the first day of creation? When there was darkness all around, God made light.

Why do you think it was so important that God created light? Light helps us see, and it is super helpful when it is dark . . . and this is exactly what Jesus does for us!

 

Jesus is the light we need when we end up in dark spaces. Maybe not actual darkness – like when you play hide and seek and decide to hide in a closet – but whenever we find ourselves feeling lost, afraid, angry, hopeless, or sad, we can turn to Jesus to guide us. 

Jesus is always here for us. Jesus' light is always bright and always warm, which helps us find and see the good things when we can't see clearly.

 

Pray: Dear God, thank you for making everything good through your "out of this world" imagination! We love all the colorful ways you created the animals in sky, land, and sea. We also are especially grateful for the way you have made each of us so uniquely good! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Amen.

  • Name two things that God created.

  • What did God say after creating each thing?

  • What did God do after everything had been created?

  • Read John 1:1. Who is the "Word" that was there in the beginning when God created all things?

  • What is your favorite thing on the list of things God created?

Read Ephesians 1:15–23 together

As people who are on a mission to show others the goodness and love of Jesus, we have to take care of our power source. Because without this power, we won’t have much strength to live like Jesus and to make his greatness known!

So how do we take care of our power source? We need to grow in our knowledge of God. Not knowing things about God. I mean growing in our understanding of how awesome God is — loving God more each day.

Isn’t it incredible that the power that raised Jesus from the dead is the same power that is in us who follow Jesus?! But this doesn’t happen automatically.

What are some ways we can make sure we’re connected to our power source, the Holy Spirit? We can spend time reading and wondering about the true stories we read in the Bible. We can spend time talking to God through prayer. We can trust the Holy Spirit to help us hear God and understand what God might ask us to do for others.

As we do these things, we get stronger and are able to be faithful to the mission Jesus has called us to.

Have your kids take turns standing under a light (flashlight) and imagine that they are getting powered up by the light. Have them name a way they can stay connect to Jesus!

Let’s stay close to him, team!


Pray: Jesus, thank you for the greatest love that you have shown, Reminding me that I am never truly on my own. When I feel powerless to do the things you tell me to, I know the Holy Spirit powers me to follow you! Amen.

  • What was the instruction Jesus gave His disciples about what their next step was to be?

  • Who did Jesus promise to send?

  • What would happen as a result of the disciples receiving power from the Holy Spirit?

Show this poster of Spider-Man. Spider-Man as Peter Parker was once told by his Uncle Ben: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Has Jesus given us power? Yes, he has! But power to do what? We have been given great power to be like Jesus and to do the things he did while he was on the earth. Part of the great things Jesus always did wherever he went was to love others and to show God’s goodness to everyone he met.

So what do you think our responsibility is because we’ve been given power from Jesus? Do you remember our Big Idea? That’s right: God gives everyone a mission. Our responsibility is to carry out God’s mission, to try to love others with Jesus’ love, to speak and act as he did. We can’t do this on our own strength and by our own power. He will help us every time we ask him!
Pray: Help me, God, to show my love for you when I obey. With the Holy Spirit’s help, I’ll follow all your ways. There will be many challenges and even opposition, But you give me strength to face them all and carry out my mission! Amen.

Oh! That is all of us! Because you know how awesome it is to be loved and called by God, we can show everyone you meet how good God is!

 

We can do great things for God! Ask your family what kinds of “superpowers” they can exercise for the different people in their life. Who can you show love to? Who can you encourage? Be as specific as you can. What can you say or do for people who might be . . . Hurting or sick? Sad or lonely? Hard to love? In need of help? Afraid or lost? Remember, anyone can do great things for God!

 

Pray: Jesus, you’ve called me to love you each day, to give that same love to all who come my way. Thank you for giving me all that I need to do all the great things as I follow your lead. Amen!

  • Why were the disciples sad when Jesus was talking with them?

  • What truths did Jesus tell the disciples so that they wouldn’t feel sad?

  • Whose name would the disciples need to call on should they need anything? 

  • Read 1 Peter 2:9. How are Jesus’ followers described?

DISCIPLE:

Read John 21:1-17 together. Saying I love you and acting like you love someone are two different things. Jesus was showing the difference. Jesus showed us he loved us by dying on the cross and rising again. Now Jesus was telling Peter to show that he loved Jesus by taking care of others.

Show a video about farm vehicles and machines. Talk about how each helps farmers with

their work. Farmers use various equipment to help them do tasks around the farm. As you might have noticed, they’re not just little wheelbarrows and wagons. Some of these are heavy-duty equipment!

When it comes to the task of sharing God’s love with others, we can do better than little wheelbarrows and wagons — meaning, we can do more than just the bare minimum. We can share God’s love by actually doing some heavy lifting . . . by caring for them!

How do we start taking care of someone else?

What are questions we could ask them?

Jesus did the same for Peter by helping him cast off that giant burden he had been carrying around since denying Jesus. Then he invited him to do the same for others.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for taking such good care of me. Remind me that I can use my hands and feet to help others. Help me to see those who need help and give me courage to help them. Give me courage to share your love with them. Amen.

DISCUSS:

  • Why do you think the disciples were fishing instead of waiting for Jesus?

  • What did Peter do when he recognized Jesus on the shore? Why would he do that? 

  • When Jesus tells Peter to feed his sheep, what is he asking Peter to do?

  • Read John 10:4. Who is the shepherd and who are the sheep in this verse?

  • Can you think of a time someone shared God's love with you? What did they do or say?

  • What is one way you can share God's love with someone?

  • When we share God's love, God's love spreads. Where is a place you can spread God's love?

Read Luke 24:13-35 together. This story tells us that even when Jesus was right there in front of their eyes, people didn’t recognize Jesus. We don’t know if it’s because Jesus looked different after he came back to life or it’s because they simply couldn’t believe that Jesus was alive again. In any case, when we open ourselves up to the truth that Jesus is always there, then we’ll begin to notice him everywhere!

 

Go on a nature walk with your family this week to enjoy outdoors and identify how nature speaks of God’s splendor and presence. Jesus is everywhere! And sometimes, we feel the closest to Jesus outside in nature.

ASK....

What do you notice? What do you hear? What do you feel and smell?

How does nature help us recognize Jesus?

How do other people help us recognize Jesus?

How does God’s word help us recognize Jesus?

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for reminding me that you are all around. Your creation, nature, and everything around us tells of your beauty, creativity, and joy. Thank you for being there for me every day. Amen.

  • What were the people on the road to Emmaus talking about when Jesus came up to them? 

  • Why do you think the people on the road to Emmaus didn't recognize Jesus?

  • How did they know it was Jesus in the end?

  • Read Psalm 23. Based on all of the action words that describe what the Lord does for us, why do you think Jesus is called the good shepherd? 

  • Why do you think it could be hard for us to remember that Jesus is always there for us?

DISCIPLE:

Read John 20:19-31 together. Thomas and all the disciples were overjoyed that Jesus was back with them. Jesus made sure all his friends got to see him with their own eyes!

 

(Tell a story about a friend you cherish (or take turns telling about your friends). Why is that friendship so important to you? How do you know that friend will always be there for you?)

 

In our story today Jesus physically appeared to his friends to comfort them when they were sad, and to tell them that he would send the Holy Spirit to always be with them.

 

Even though Jesus isn’t physically with us today, we have the same Holy Spirit with us when need comfort. When we are scared or lonely, we can pray to Jesus telling him how we feel, and the Holy Spirit will give us comfort and peace in our bodies. Another way that we can meet with Jesus is through other people.

Even though we don’t see Jesus, we can trust that he’s there and wants to hear from us. But we have to make the effort to meet with him. Jesus loves us so much that he loves being with us, and loves taking great care of us. I can meet with Jesus every day!

Play ”God’s Wonderful Surprise” from the Jesus Storybook Bible. Start at 0:45 seconds. As it says in the story we just heard, Jesus defeated death! And if he can do that, he can do anything! Have your kids write or draw personal prayers on a construction paper cross.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for watching over me. I am so glad that you are alive and living in our hearts. Help me to share this good news with all who need to hear it. Because you’re alive today and every day! Amen.

DISCIPLE:

Read Matthew 26:31-35 together. Just like Jesus said, Peter pretended he did not know him and lied about his relationship with Jesus. Peter’s day had just become very dark . . . although it was nothing compared to what would happen to Jesus.

Would Peter have suffered the same fate as Jesus if he had told the truth? Maybe. All we know is that Peter was filled with regret that he didn’t stick by or stick up for Jesus when his friend and Savior was going through the darkest day of all.

Sticking with Jesus means to trust him even when you don’t see any immediate results. But if you keep at it, you will find that Jesus will come through for you. What are some things that comfort you when your day is dark? . . . like when you feel scared or sad?

Maybe it’s a favorite toy or blanket, a trusted friend or family member, praying to God, a nightlight, and other things.

 

Pray: Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Even when things are dark, remind me that I can stick with you because you know what to do and you know everything about me. Amen.

Jesus can change anything. That’s right, anything. That doesn’t mean Jesus will change anything every time you ask for it. Jesus knows what’s best for us, and sometimes the best thing is to not give us what we want. But that doesn’t mean he can’t!

Think about one thing in your life that you want to ask Jesus to change. Then, have your family members write or draw a picture to represent that change you’d like to see.

Pray: Dear God, thank you for Jesus, who can change anything. Help us to remember that you have the power to transform both big and small things . . . even impossible things. Start the change with us, and help us to go out and make the kinds of changes in our world that let others know how awesome you are! Amen.

  • For example, fingernails grow two to three times faster than your toenails. I bet that you have never felt your fingernails or your toenails growing. 

  • We don't always notice the change happening around us, but it is definitely happening. But Jesus changes how we see things.

  • What are some things that we don't notice changing until they have changed? As a family, write or draw your answers on a sheet of paper.

Pray: Dear God, thank you for your miracle-working power in the Bible story we heard today. Thank you that you miraculously change the way we see things, too. We pray that you help us to see the world and people around us like you do. Help us to be the change that helps change others to be more like you. Amen.

  • What question did the disciples ask Jesus as they passed by the blind man? Why do you think they asked this question?

  • What did Jesus do when he saw this blind man? How does this show us how we should respond to people in need?

  • In what ways were the religious leaders who saw or heard about this miracle, "blind"?

  • Ephesians 5:13 says that everything that the light touches also becomes a light. What do you think that means?

Have your family write one thing they wish they could change about something that happened in the past. This can be something personal or something historical. If you could choose anything, what would you change? 

Maybe this change you make to the past would make your life or even this entire world better. But the fact of the matter is, we can't change what's already happened. No matter how painful or embarrassing it might have been, our past is a part of us. 

However, that doesn't make us any less lovable to God! God sees past our past and loves us so much anyway. Our past doesn’t change God’s love for us.

 

Pray: Dear God, thank you for your never-changing love for us! In a world where everything changes, we feel safe and secure knowing your love for us remains the same, no matter what we might have done in the past. Help us to continue to transform to be more like you. Amen.

Talk with your family about how there are different positions people can pray in. There are so many different ways we can pray! Some of us may have grown up thinking that we always have to bow our heads, close our eyes, and clasp our hands when we pray. That’s a great position to be in especially if we get easily distracted!

The Bible actually shows us that there are many ways to pray to God. We can lift our eyes up as if talking to God (John 17:1).

We can bow or kneel down (Psalm 95:6).

We can stretch our arms out wide (1 Kings 8:22-23).

We can even be standing, laying down, sitting, walking, singing, or leaping for joy!

Choose a way you’d like to pray right now, and thank God for the gift of being able to communicate with God! Then pray with your family.

Have you ever wondered about what we can share with others?

Start by looking at what you have. You have a place to live, food to eat, clothes to wear, toys to play with, things to learn, people who take care of you.

What else can you think of?

Now, how can you share any one of these things with someone else?

Next let’s think about your interests, your gifts . . . you know, the things you are naturally good at. We are all born with these things!

Can you name at least one ability God has given you?

What can you do with this ability to help someone else?

Practice thanking God often for all of these things and remember that what God wants most of all is for us to think of others and not just ourselves.

Jesus taught us how to share with others. And, when it feels tough sharing things you love with others, remember that God shared Jesus with you, and Jesus shared everything he had for us.

  • Which way of giving and doing good deeds was Jesus warning people not to do?

  • Read Matthew 6:2. What happens when people do good but then "announce it with trumpets"? What reward is Jesus talking about?
